The new Camaro appeared at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2007 and was an instant hit, and the big news is that the car is going into production almost unaltered.
The 2009 Chevrolet Camaro SS is based on GM’s Zeta platform, which underpins Australia’s Holden Commodore and the new Pontiac GTO as well as the Pontiac G8. The Zeta platform was designed from the start to be adaptable, and so far it looks as if it’s going to spread through most of GM’s brands.
The Zeta platform is also remarkably stiff, and is the ideal basis for the Camaro. The platform can be altered for wheelbase, so the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro SS is not going to be merely a Holden Commodore with a couple of doors taken off (that would be the new Pontiac GTO).
“The new Camaro will be almost identical to the concept, a thoroughly modern interpretation of the 1969 model, considered by many to be the best design of the car’s first generation,” said Ed Welburn, GM’s global vice president of design, who actually owns a 1969 Camaro SS.
The new car will feature multi link independent rear suspension and there will be choices of manual and automatic gearboxes, as well as V6 and V8 engines. The gearboxes will likely be the same six speed manual and six speed auto found in the Holden Commodore.
The Camaro was deigned by a particularly young group of designers, ranging in age from 27 to 35, but they all grew up with a common passion for American performance cars.
Nearly 4.8 million Camaros have been sold between the car’s introduction in 1967 and 2002, when production of the iconic vehicle ended, and there are more than one thousand Camaro clubs around the world.
The standard V6 model will use the 3.6 liter version of GM’s global V6, tuned to between 240 horsepower and 260 horsepower, while the V8 option will most likely be the 6.2 liter version of the GEN VI with around 400 horsepower. But GM is also currently working on a direct injection version of the V8, gaining more horsepower while increasing fuel economy from between three to six percent, and Dave Sczomak, development engineer-GM Powertrain Advanced Engineering, says the technology will bump power to “well over 450HP.” That engine may well make an appearance in the Camaro, either in the standard car or the SS model.
Either way, the SS version will be stripped out for lightweight performance. Expect the SS to weigh somewhere between 350 to 500 pounds less than the V8 Camaro for a 0-60 time around a tenth of a second or so better than the standard V8.
The all-new 2009 Chevrolet Camaro SS will begin with early production versions right at the end of 2008 and will hit the streets in the first quarter of 2009. But it’s not going to be an entirely US car, as the Camaro will be built at the Oshawa #2 car plant, part of GM’s award-winning, Oshawa assembly plant complex in Canada.

I have to say that the outside of this car is flat out amazing. Some unbelieveable lines come on this car, and it will be an instant collector’s edition. I think the expectations of the fuel economy coupled with the performance aspects of its engine will be exceptional if it lives up to the hype. As far as the interior, well lets just say that their idea of crossing futuristic with old school has failed miserably. All of the options that are out there and the chioces they made, I am embarrased for them. Apparently the designer is fantastic on the outside, but the inside is where the creature comforts are, or should I say “are not!” The visual aesthetics on the speedometer, and tacymeter is something off of a futureistic spaceship. KISS buddy………….. Keep it simple stupid. Something basic with a bright background and a high performace look to it would be awesome. I don’t know if the old school idiot dials actually work, or if they’re just there for looks, but I know I don’t want to have to flick at it to see if its still working. The layout has nothing in it or anything on their site to show what upgrades they’re going to offer. The radio looks weird. I’m sure it will be nice, but the idea behind making cars popular is to have the ability for the soon-to-be owners to choose the options and upgrades they want to make their car unique. Maybe I am asking too much out of a new age musclecar. I don’t need to go mach 5 with my hair on fire, but I sure do like being able to get out of my own way if the time comes. I’d rather cruise in comfort down the coast with the top down.

Well put the new cts is a stunning car, I myself have a 1995 Camaro and I am looking foward to the new Camaro, hopefully they will put that rumored 650+ hp v8 from the ” Corvette ss” into the Camaro ss

i have heard from a friend of my dad’s who works for gm that the 3 trim levels will be rs, z28, and ss. rs will have a 280-horse v6, z28 will have a 400-horse v8, and the ss will have a 540-horse v8. the looks will be the same as the concept, apart from the roof being raised about an inch and a half and the front seat rails being extended for taller drivers. the z28 and ss will feature wider rear wheels for the extra power and the wheel styles will be different from the rs. but im not saying the rs will have honda civic tires, in fact, the rs was originally going to have over 300hp, but for the sake of z28 sales it was detuned (the reason being the rs would kick a mustang GT’s ass).
Questions: How much will the 6-cylinder run? Will we be allowed to select a wheel package?
Being a long time Camero guy, I can’t wait fot the new camero to hit the streets I am already saving up for my 1st speeding ticket and the increase in my insurance.
I currently own a 99 SS & 91 RS Camaro and used to own a 69 SS which like so many 1st gen Camaro owners wished they never sold.I was looking into buying another 69 Camaro until I saw the new Camaro in L.A. at the car show a year ago.Man,I can’t wait for it to come out.It’s so f*#@ing beautiful!!!

I have always been in love with the 68 Chevy Camaro and now that the 2009 replica has arrived it is a car of masterpiece. I think that it is only fair that since the 2009 Covette is being upgraded to the LS9 engine that the rebirth of the 2009 SS Camaro should carry the LS7 engine. Chevrolet has always led from the front so lets make sure that the Chevy Corvette and Chevy Camaro stay in the front with the LS9 and LS7 engines.

The guy who designed this camaro is a FREAKING GENIOUS!!!!!!!! And i would do absolutely ANYTHING to a certain extend, just to get one of those 2009 camaros with the V8 engine.
From the pictures I have seen this new camaro should be a absolute knock out for GM.

This camaro will make the mustang seem like a ford pinto on and off the track.as far as looks go It will make the drivers of mustangs sit alot lower in their seats when a camaro pulls up next to them at a red lite . I dont advocate street racing but the temptation will be nearly impossible to resist. but camaro driverss wave good-buy before the light goes green.because the last thing they will see is a cloud of burning rubber an tail lights

I’m way excited for this car. I’ve been a camaro enthusiast ever since I bought my first one nine years ago. This car will be the next new car I buy. and to answe someone else’s question I’ve heard rumors that it will have a limited slip differential but not a posi. This so that it can still corner well. Can’t wait till the camaro SS comes out. I didnt even know that the Dodge Challenger is going to come out in May 08. Stock 425hp 0-60 4.8, 0-100 and back under 17 seconds, 1/4 mile ran 13.3. total weight is between 4,031-4,140lbs. Iam thinking that the Z28 is going to be 400hp and really hoping that the SS is going to come out with the vette engine that is pushing 505hp and the weight is around 3600lbs. That engine alone is worth 12k but its worth it. Really hard to save up for the SS. Just want to pull to a light next to a challenger, shelby, or a ricer. My question is….why not make it really bad and make it ALL WHEEL DRIVE?
The new pics of the actual production prototypes look like crap!! Both exterior & interior are pathetic! The production car looks nothing like the concept car that appeared in the shows. They had a chance to make a great car and they totally screwed it up!

i think that the 2009 camero is amazing. it is the sweetest car that i’ve ever seen. It also sounds great. I love the it is combined from the past and the future and i’d pay $300,000 dollars
im curently enlisted in the united states military… i use to be a mustang man , always wanted one saved and saved and always had something go wrong when i would get enoght to get one….. i bought my first camero last year in 2007 ,,,, and i will have to say i havent wanted to drive anything but a camero since then because it feels like ur just bein disrespectful to a time honored tradion that they took away in 2002 …. im planing to use my enlistment bonus and own one of these beautiful creatures when it comes out of the factory and onto the show room floor i almost have enough to pay cash for the 40 000 dollar car and wont think twice about buying one … i start arguments with my dad all the time bout how he thinks that a 72 gto would blow the doors off of the new camero … but with that 6.2 engine theres no way how can i go about getting one of these creatures resurved ….

actually i read the the 2009 camaro ss will be less than the ford mustang being one of its top competitors. and should be selling only between 26,000-28,000. thats pretty good considering all that it holds and how it looks. im trying to put a special order in for one now. i love it!
Sorry guys. I’m a long-time Camaro buff, but I am completely turned off by the new Camaro. I have owned 4 1967’s and 1 1969 Camaro over the past 30 years. Currently there is a ‘67 coup that I’ve owned for 28 years and a ‘67 Rally Sport that I’ve owned for 19 years in my garage. I was at the NY International Auto show in 2006 for the Camaro introduction and I just got home from the 2008 show a few mintues ago. The new Camaro looks like a dune buggy with a Cadallac CTS front-end. It was sitting way up high on these huge over-sized tires. My first reaction 2 years ago was negative, but back then I figured it was just a concept and the actual production car will look better.

GM will once again develop something you will see in japanese cars in a few years.

With FORD pushing out “500 hp and 480 ft-lbs. of torque” for that new Shelby GT500 Mustang model and DODGE pushing out “425 hp and 420 ft-lbs. of torque” for that new Charger SRT8, the base 2009 Chevy Camaro V8 better come with at least “525 hp and 500 ft-lbs. of torque”!!! Thus, the new 2009 Camaro SS should come with a minimum of “550 to 600 hp and 525 ft-lbs. of torque”.
Any sports coupe in the class of a camaro or camaro SS should be able have a top speed of around 210 to 220 MPH.
GM and CHEVROLET need to stop messing around with “child’s play horsepower (400 hp and below)” and come back with some “REAL HORSEPOWER” and “TORQUE”!!!

The new Chevy camaro’s are cool but they should make all the camaro engines E-85 so GM will get credit for being envirnmentally friendly. Then the camaro will be a big hit for people that want to lokk cool and be fuel free and the people that want to go fast and look cool.

I agree with elvis graton, that the “cheap front black plastic grill” has got to go!!! The Front ruins it for me and I am a die-hard camaro fan, I have had three in my life time and was really looking forward to this one until I saw how much it did NOT look like the 1969 model. Ford did a much better job with bringing back the Mustang then Chevrolet has done with this Camaro. I can’t believe all you other die-hard Camaro fans don’t see the flaws in this new Camaro!

The one thing i don’t like is that typically unimaginative, dull American Interior (especially the dash).

The early corvette’s were the same …My personal favourite’s were the 70-73 model vette’s , but again – that bad interior designer was about, and that’s just one of many many car’s that suffered
This is a mainly Canadian manufactured car, built on an Opel frame designed in Australia. The Australian Commodore(which used the same frame)is a WAY better car all around by the way.

Boy how I miss my ‘68 Z28! But talk about a blast from the past with the new Camaro. My compliments to the design team. They have truely captured the nostalgia of the 60’s and packaged it into today’s technology. Bravo!
Okay, for the “long time camero guy”, the car’s name is spelled “camaro”. Secondly, whats this crap about a “detuned” RS? The RS package is an APPEARANCE package, not a performance package. Hence the existance of RS/SS and RS/Z28 first gen camaro’s. The models available for 2010 will be an LT (VVT dohc V6 only), and the SS. The SS will be available with an L99 400 horse v8 with VVT and cylinder deactivation (auto trans only). If you order the 6-speed manual in the SS, you will get the 6.2L 422 hp LS3 V8. The RS package (available on both models) will add a rear spoiler (to the LT, the SS has one already), the cool “halo” headlights, larger wheels, and some other cool bits here and there. The 2010 Camaro also comes with IRS standard, and the SS will feature Brembo brake calipers. I am glad to see how hard Chevy worked on this car to get it right. We shall see how well they succeeded.
I am a loyal chevy camaro owner and can’t wait for this one. I know I can order mine in November 2008. It’s going to be a bigt seller!!! Can’t wait to see how many speeding tickets I get. God knows back in 1985 and 2000 I paid at least 2 cops wages for the year.

Hopefully, gm won’t screw it up the way ford did the t-bird. They blew a lot of smoke during the pre-production about how it would cost high $20’s and then introduced it at $40K and it wasn’t a $40K car. After all of the got-to-have-one crowd bought one, they had no market left. American car companies are noterious for trying to market their garbage that nobody wants and then making it up on the cool cars. Why don’t they cut the crap and make high quality cars that will sell for a fair price. I’m not holding my breath; but will buy the convertable if it last longer than 2 years and is not priced for suckers.

Haven’t looked at American cars in decades. Last time I looked seriously was in the late 70’s and all I could find was crap. Been mostly a Toyota guy ever since. Used to own a highly modified Supra TT. Currently have a Nissan GT-R. But this Camaro SS has changed all that. I went to the Chicago Auto Show recently and was blown away by some of the stuff I saw coming out of GM. I love this car. I’m definitely going to take a close look. I’m thinkin’ with the right mods this thing will kick some a**. Hell, I was impressed with the Chevy Cobalt SS.
So why did GM take so long to get here?
I made a suggestion once to a GM big wig, that they should make the concept of the Chevelle. About 7-8 years ago they adverstised this concept in a Car & Driver magazine, if they listened it could sell better then the Charger. I’m not sure if I’m the only one that would agree with this, but I personally love the Chevelle’s. I’m sure GM should be looking for the best way to pull there rears out of the sling, since the big wigs just like to the money for themselves. With out limitations there are no rules. Maybe we could also inquire about the secret project that they did with electric cars. There weren’t any big problems, just greedy exces, who didn’t want to loose money from the oil companies. The camero is a new car too, but we’ll see if they’re smart enough to make a car people want to buy.

WOW ALL of you were totally wrong! ss only makes 422 horse… lame. with that big ass engine, i wouldnt waste a dime on it. Its still gonna get walked all over by a stock shelby, an 04 cobra makes more than that stock and its only a 289 cu in…You chevy guys need to give it up gm will gone in months

My first car, by very strange circumstance, was a ‘72 SS 454 El Camino with the cowl induction system a turbo 400 tranny and posi-trac. It’s a wonder I lived through high school.
Given that Uncle Sam now owns this company, this is probably the LAST remnant of the muscle car days drawing it’s last breath. I’d like to have one before I draw mine, just for old time’s sake.
Not to mention it’s just SMOOTH. Nice job guys. Class finish even if you did get screwed by the Big O in the gray house.

I like the new Camaro’s myself. but I have to agree that they are somewhat built like the Mustangs! I own a Mustang an from the back an side it looks like a Tang the front and the hood doesn’t. Guess Chevy couldn’t come up with their own design. I plan on getting a new Camaro next Year if they have the Convertible.. Gots to have a convertible or I don’t want one. I own a Mustang GT convertible 07 an it is very very nice., I cannot believe they want to sell those camaros 8,000 over the sticker price. You’d have to be friggin crazy to do that. It’s just a car. Usually they will go down off the sticker but damn they went plum crazy over the sticker price. It will wear out just like the other vehicles will. I won’t give them that much for one.
I’ve seen the new Camero. And those of you that same it looks like a cross between a Mustang and a Monte Carlo and a Cadie, and a… are right. It looks like crap. Also, check the spare compartment. No spare and a battery in the middle of it all. Also, see how to open the trunk when the battery is dead. Keep checking.. you’ll find more of the lovely little things that will drive you nuts, and the body flexes with speed and cracks form in the front plastic. Don’t you just love the new GM and Camero?
Its bad to the bone; ruff and tuff. My bro is rebuilding his 71/72 Camero for the 3rd time; every inch. Getting back to it is what helped him get through his recent stem cell transplant. GM and Chevys keep us geezers going.

CAMARO GAVE THIS TO ME IN THE FORM OF A 2000 SS CAMARO ALL SLP OPTIONS INCLUDED.MY CAR IS TEN YEARS OLD. MUSTANG IS JUST NOW CATHING UP.WITH ALL THIS SAID IF YOU ARE NOT GETTING INTO A RIDE THAT MAKES YOU FELL LIKE YOU ARE SIXTEEN ON A FRIDAY AFTERNOON 75 DEGREES ON THE WAY TO PICK UP A HOT GIRL, YOU SHOULD NOT SHORT YOUR SELF OUT OF THIS. I think the new junkmaro sucks and GM (government motors)tried to keep up with the ford motor company with the production of this crap!!! If you still don’t know which motor company is the #1 company then let me school you. FORD motor company has from day 1; has manufactured a top quality vehicle at an afFORDable price for all americans. This is not the first time GM (government motors)has been bailed out by the government. As amatter of fact its the second time. You did not see or hear of FORD getting bailed out ever from the government or any other organization! ask yourself one question,do you want to buy your next new car from a company that is reputable,honest,fair,first,and not failing (FORD) or a company that is untruhful,dishonest,failing,failed once before,and right down dirty (GM).

My 89 stang convert does 10.20 @138 all motor, small block fuel injected too… Gm will never build anything that can touch me, sorry guys
